Social Media Platforms for Small Business - Part 2 of 6

In your personal life, you might mindlessly scroll through the various social platforms available to you. But unbeknownst to you, you are absorbing more than just funny cat videos or enjoying updated pictures of your favourite cousin's kids. With the invention of algorithms, advertisements for new and improved products now available from your favourite brands are strategically placed in your news feed.
Alternatively, in your role as a small business owner, you can use the various social media platforms to your advantage to attract new customers and establish your brand - all with the ultimate goal of selling your product to the masses.
In our last blog post in this series, we explored Facebook's advantages and disadvantages as a marketing tool for your small business. In this edition, we will be looking at the pictures-a-plenty world of Instagram.
Instagram is about as close to an "overnight success" story as it gets. Back in 2010, in less than two months following Instagram's launch, it had over a million users. That number has increased to now over 1 billion using the platform each and every day. Today, Instagram is one of the top social media platforms for business.
Initially, Instagram started out as a platform for sharing photos and still keeps this element as its core use. However, with the expansion to include videos in a feature called "stories ", Instagram has become a fantastic way for brands to showcase their products, values, and voice. As you can imagine, that means Instagram is one of the best tools for the generation of leads.
Pros
• Highly appealing visual aspect
• More popular than Facebook with the younger generation
• Created for mobile users
Cons
• Misleading metrics (# of followers doesn't necessarily equal engagement)
• Needs an aggressive posting schedule
In summary, Instagram is great if your audience is younger and typically shopping from mobile. Plus, Instagram created a "Checkout" feature which means it's fully set up for eCommerce. Your clients can now look at product images and purchase what they like directly from their Instagram account.
If you decide to use this platform (which you probably should), do some market research to make sure your audience is on Instagram. Creating a consistent posting schedule and make your photos engaging and relevant to your brand.
